GT Roof: The world’s first inflatable roof top tent
The GT Roof is the world’s first inflatable roof top tent. It only weighs 25 kg and has a pack size of 1 m x 1 m x 15 cm. It is therefore about 2/3 lighter and handier than conventional roof top tents. Apart from hard-shell or fold-able roof top tents, GentleTent establishes a new category of “inflatable roof top tents” on the camping market. It was not without reason that in 2018 the GT Roof received the Outdoor Industry Award, where important innovations in the outdoor market are awarded.
The tent is firmly connected to the car roof rack via a sturdy square aluminum frame of 1 m x 1 m and a mounting kit. When driving, the tent remains mounted on the car roof as a small package.
Thanks to its squared frame, the GT Roof can be fixed to the roof top in two ways:
As the GT Roof only weighs 25 kg it is also suitable for vehicles with a low roof load and has hardly any effect on the driving process of the car.
The permitted roof load indicates with how much weight the roof top of the vehicle can be loaded, without endangering the traffic safety of the vehicle. The roof load is the sum of the roof top tent, cross beams and other loads on the roof. For a lot of vehicles the roof load is limited to 50 kg!
Other advantages that result from the low weight and the compact construction: it also needs little space after the road trip and can even be stowed away on the wall. Moreover it can easily be mounted by one person.
The inflatable roof top tent GT Roof explained in detail

HOW CAN I USE THE GT ROOF?
In addition to its use on the roof of the vehicle, the tent can be used on the loading area of a vehicle, on the ground or even on a calm lake.

Frequently asked questions about the roof top tent GT Roof
How is the GT Roof set up and dismantled?
The Roof top tent is set up as follows:
1. Remove the protective cover
2. Open the belt buckle and unfold the lying platform
3. Close the valves and connect the air pump
4. Inflate the lying platform
5. Inflate the air tent
6. Connect the telescopic ladder and fix it with guy ropes if necessary
Using the air pump that is included when buying a GT Roof, the set up process takes 10 minutes. Having some experience, the dismantling process can be done in the same time, and has to be done in the reverse order.
Is the GT Roof suitable for winter?
The materials of the roof top tent are winter-resistant. The tent itself does not come with special insulation properties, however. It is possible to use the tent during winter. If there is a lot of snow, it should be removed from the tent regularly. An advantage of the tent, when it is used in cold temperatures, is the breathable material, which helps to wick away moisture to the outside. What must be considered however is, that the interior area of the tent is cooling down to low temperatures, in case of extreme cold.
Where is the telescopic ladder stored? Is it considered in the pack size?
The telescopic ladder can be brought together and is already included in the small pack size of the GT Roof. When travelling with a vehicle big enough, we would recommend to store the ladder in the trunk, to have it immediately available to ensure a comfortable set up of the tent.
What is considered in the total weight of 25 kg?
The whole, ready-packed roof top tent weighs 25 kg, including the telescopic ladder.
Do I need a mattress?
Yes, we would recommend to use an additional mattress, as the lying platform is relatively hard. Take a look at the GT Mattress, our camping mattress with air mesh cover, which is available as additional equipment.
Can I leave sleeping bags and blankets in the tent?
It depends on the size of the blanket or the sleeping bag. The cover of the tent offers some leeway, so that thin blankets or sleeping bags can be left in the tent. Voluminous blankets have to be transported in the car, however.
Is there an awning for the GT Roof?
The GT Roof comes with a zipper, which can be used to connect an awning to the roof top tent. However, this awning is only produced on request, as there is no final version of the roof top tent-awning yet. The current solution consists of three parts and is made out of Cordura fabric. It can be ordered with or without windows on the sides. As the height deviates from vehicle to vehicle, it is necessary to specify the required length, when ordering the GT Roof awning. Please do not hesitate to contact us for more information. (email@example.com).
At the moment the prototype looks like this:
How can I mount the GT Roof to the roof of the vehicle?
To fix the GT Roof to the car, a roof railing and two cross beams are required, which must be mounted on the roof at a distance of approx. 80 cm. The roof rack and tent are connected via the aluminium frame, using the mounting set.
Is it possible to fix the GT Roof to all roof racks? Do I have to consider something, when using the mounting set?
The GT Roof can be mounted on 95% of the roof racks with our standard mounting set. In exceptional cases, an alternative mounting set, that is provided on request, assures that the roof top tent can be fixed to the car easily.
This alternative mounting set is for example needed for the Skoda Yeti with the standard roof rack of Skoda, as the fixing points of the GT Roof and the roof rack on the car would be at the same position.
The distance between the mounting screws in our current standard version is 8.5 cm. This is, for example needed for the standard roof rack of the Mazda CX-5. Originally we produced them with a distance of 5 cm (right in the picture). Since many roof racks have a width of 8 cm, we have adjusted the width.
How can I avoid water condensation inside the GT Roof?
The GT ROOF is made of a high-quality Tencate All Season Touring material. As the material is breathable, the tent fabric can be used as a single layer. As a result, there is much less water condensation in the interior, than with conventional tents that only consist of one layer. In unfavourable weather conditions, the inside may become slightly damp.
Tip: Good ventilation, e.g. open windows, can help to prevent condensation!
Does the tent provide enough space for tall people (> 1,95m)?
The lying platform has a length of 220 cm, so that also tall persons have enough space. Another advantage of our roof top tent is that the walls do not run as pointedly together as the walls of “conventional” tents, but provide a pleasant and generous room height of at least 130 cm over the entire tent room.
What happens in the worst-case scenario? Can I fix the lying platform or the tube of the tent?
Yes, the lying platform, as well as the tent tube can be repaired in the case of damage. The tent fabric is equipped with repair openings, so that the tube can be taken out and repaired easily by using a repair-tape. If the hole in the tube is too big to be taped, it can also be replaced by a new one. If the lying platform is damaged – which is very unlikely, due to the robust material is – a special adhesive is needed to repair it. The repair tape for the tube and the special adhesive are included in the scope of delivery.
Is there anything else I should know before buying a GT Roof?
If the GT Roof is mounted on the rear of the vehicle, an extension cable might be necessary for vehicles which do not have a rear 12-volt socket (cigarette lighter). The cable is is available in electronic stores starting from 10€.
